How it works

Frequently Asked Questions

What is allthis?

It's a place where you can get in touch with just about anyone in the world. To make this possible, we built a marketplace that efficiently values any individual's time.

People join for personal or professional reasons, or to raise funds for a chairty they care about. Our members trade ten-minute blocks of time ("Tens") like stocks. You can use someone's Ten if you like or hold it as an investment and profit when its value goes up.

That's it. Sign up, promote and sell your Ten, buy and trade other people's Tens, earn credits, and be well.

Our response to the recent controversy

There has been a lot of controversy regarding the trading of non-member Tens recently in the news and we wanted to take a minute to tell you about it and what we are doing to address the issues.

We are creating a place where you could meet just about anyone in the world. This is done by trading ten-minute time chunks ("Tens") of members and non-members alike. In the case of non-members, those Tens were conditional on the person actually joining, but the idea was to make them tradable in advance, to show the non-members the level of interest in their time. We don't profit from this. People buy their Tens from each other, not from allthis. The non-member profiles were clearly labeled as such and we never had a single complaint or confusion over this in the months since it was introduced.

Recently however, several prominent Internet personalities complained about this practice, saying that non-member profiles were misleading. To address this issue we have temporarily halted the trading of non-member Tens and are redesigning these pages to make them clearer.

We didn't do a good job communicating to our visitors what we are really all about, and for that, we apologize.

To help reduce confusion and alleviate people's concerns, we disabled all non-member pages created by our users to date, and made it impossible for them to create new ones. Those who invested in non-member Tens received full refunds of their time credits.

We are working on additional design changes and will run them by our critics and supporters alike before releasing them.

How does it work?
When you find someone whose time you want, click the "Buy" button on their profile. If you have enough time credits (the site's virtual currency), the person's Ten will be added to your stack. You have just invested in the right to chat with someone for ten minutes online. And the price of that Ten went up 10% (it happens every time automatically when a Ten changes hands).

Anyone can buy a Ten away from you at any time. You'll get back what you paid plus 5%. The other 5% go to the person whose time is being traded.

If you are still holding someone's Ten after 24 hours, you can schedule the chat with the person. The chat happens right here on allthis.

You don't have to use anyone's Tens. Some people buy them purely for investment purposes. And then they turn their accumulated credits into cash donations for their favorite causes.

By joining allthis you pledge to spend ten minutes of your time online with whomever can afford your Ten and chooses to use it.
Tens
A Ten is the right to chat with someone online for ten minutes. You can buy and hold any number of other people's Tens. Holding someone's Ten doesn't create any obligations, and you don't owe anything to anyone who bought your own Ten -- until they decide to use it and schedule the chat with you.
  • Why would I want anyone's time?
Make a new friend, talk to someone you admire, get professional advice, or just chat with someone interesting.
       or
Use it as an investment to make more time credits. See someone up and coming? Buy their Ten! When others discover this person and buy the Ten away, you'll make credits.
  • Who determines the price of a Ten?
The allthis community does. People will keep buying a Ten away from each other and its price will keep rising until there's no one else willing to invest more time credits than the current holder.
  • Why can't I just get someone's ten minutes right away?
Because other members need a chance to buy it away from you. That's how the allthis community collectively determines the true value of each member's time.
Time credits
  • What are time credits?
Time credits (marked by the symbol ŧ) are a virtual currency used for buying Tens. New members start with 10,000ŧ and their Ten is initially priced at 2400ŧ. Non-members can be traded too. Their Tens are initially priced at 1200ŧ and will double when they join allthis.
  • Where is my account history?
Click on your account balance in the top right corner.
  • How do I get more time credits?
Make your profile interesting so people buy your Ten and bid it up, so you get more time credits. You can also invest in other people's undervalued Tens, or simply buy time credits with a credit card.
  • What can I use my time credits for?
Buy other people's Tens to talk to them or as an investment. You can also turn your time credits into cash donations for any of over two million nonprofits represented at allthis.
